We made it to Big Bend but only after a 2 day delay due to our truck needing a new radiator and 2 new thermostats.
Big Bend is distinct in that it is the only National Park to have an entire mountain range with in Park boundaries. Big Bend also, like many other parks, has 3 biospheres, that being River, Desert and Mountain.

These next pictures illustrate why you should have someone on the ground watching to make sure your clearances are good. We pulled into a Terrible Herbts Gas Station to discover the pump we pulled up to didn't work. Luckily for me, Arlene went to the pump up from where we pulled in and as I began to pull forward, I see this look on Arlene's face as if to say "STOP"! Sure enough, the clearance was only 11'6" as you see in the photo (our minimum clearance is 14'! YIKES!). The only thing that happened was the beam from the overhead started to push in on the Fantastic Vent cover.
After re-situating ourself so we could fill out a TA(Traffic Accident) report (more on this to follow), I was able to pop out the dent and re-install the Fantastic vent cover. No Harm, No Foul as Chick Hearns use to always say.
A traffic report is something you should always fill out. It protects you from the other party/s from saying something that just didn't happen. Along with the TA report, take LOTS of pictures should the other party/s claim more damage than what actually occurred.
Lesson's learned:
Always be aware of your overhead clearances. Take nothing for granted.
Have someone on the ground watching for you. Had Arlene not been where she was, it could have been a lot worse.
And last but not least, looking back, I was in a hurry and went into a standard gas station. The clearances at these stations are or could be very limiting for something like a 5th wheel. Next time, I'll go out of my way to find a Truck stop where I know the clearances can accommodate us. I may have to wait, but that's easy!
